Bukan aplikasi gaming, bukan social media biasa, tapi platform fundraising yang literally jadi "plan B" masyarakat Amerika quando semuanya nggak berfungsi.
Hook - Load-Bearing Part of American Culture
Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief The Verge, baru aja ngajak ngobrol CEO GoFundMe, Tim Cadogan, di podcast Decoder.
"Everything changed, and what are the resources, what is the infrastructure, and what are the tools?"ujarnya. "GoFundMe emerged as one of those things."
Technical Details - Business Model yang Unik
Oke jadi begini cara kerja GoFundMe:
Tim ngaku: "After that, we ask the donor if they want to give us a voluntary contribution, a tip. Totally up to them."
Key Features - Kenapa Healthcare Selalu #1?
Tim kasih penjelasan filosofis: "When a significant medical issue occurs, we face our mortality... that is the biggest thing. That is the moment when, more than any other moment, people want to support and show their love for someone."
Dia juga kasih contoh nyata:
"I met Harlow... she's about five years old. She has a very rare genetic disease. Her parents figured out how to get treatment, but there were $120,000 in administrative costs that weren't covered. They raised it in four days."
Geek Opinion - Profit vs Mission Dilemma
"ACA Medicaid expansion would reduce the biggest bucket of dollars that comes through the platform. A more craven capitalist would take a hard look at that in a different way."
Dan jawaban Tim? "No." Dia bahkan cerita kalau mereka kadang justru arahin orang ke program government yang tersedia, bukan maksa pake GoFundMe doang.
Ini berbeda sama banyak tech company lain yang ujung-ujungnya "follow the money." Tim ngaku: "We have no other businesses. We don't do advertising. We don't sell data." — semuanya dikerjain demi satu mission: help people help each other.
Tapi nih ya...
Ada kontroversi yang nggak bisa diabaikan:
- GoFundMe bikin halaman nonprofit tanpa izin — mereka dituduh "plagiarize" charity pages dan disuruh take down sama beberapa state attorneys general
- Freezing funds untuk Gaza humanitarian causes — banyak yang komplain fundraisernya difreeze tanpa penjelasan jelas
Tim cuma bilang ini soal "following regulations" dari payment processor mereka (Adyen, Stripe, PayPal).
Wrap Up
Tim ngaku: "Our job is people help each other. And then if we do that well, they will be more successful." — profit itu consequence, bukan goal.
Apakah ini sustainable dalam jangka panjang? We'll see.
