Diare
No obat vibes banget, bro.
Dia cerita ke The Verge:
"It's no joke about the explosive diarrhea," - Bryan
Symptoms lainnya включают nausea, loss of appetite, cramping, bloating.
Taco Bell voluntarily recall Lettuce?!
Nah ini yang bikin interesting. Federal and state officials lagi investigation Taco Bell setelah fast food chain ini voluntarily recalled lettuce, cilantro, onion, pico de gallo, dan guacamole di beberapa locations.
Michigan jadi state dengan kasus tertinggi: 2.640 kasus sampai Senin lalu. State health officials menyebut lettuce dan salad greens sebagai "potential source" though other food items cannot be completely ruled out.
Previous outbreaks pernah traced ke:
- Bagged salads (2020: 640+ people sick, trace ke Fresh Express plant di Illinois)
- Snow peas & snap peas
- Raspberries
- Herbs kayak parsley, basil, cilantro
Jadi apapun yang berbau leafy greens... maybe avoid dulu ya?
Federal Budget Cuts = Surveillance Berantakan
ProPublica melaporkan bahwa FDA lost more than 240 consumer safety specialists last year amid Trump administration's cuts ke federal health agencies. Plus, July lalu CDC scaled back program FoodNet yang melacak foodborne illnesses.
Dulu FoodNet bekerja sama sama 10 state governments untuk track pathogens kayak Cyclospora, Salmonella, E. coli, dll. Sekarang? CDC stopped requiring state health departments untuk track most of those pathogens, termasuk Cyclospora.
Dr. J. Glenn Morris, director of the Emerging Pathogens Institute di University of Florida, ngomong:
"Essentially, CDC is backing off on one of their best surveillance systems"
Jadi bukan nggak ada kasus—tapi sistem deteksinya lagi dalam kondisi... let’s say, not ideal.
Why Parasite Ini Susah Dilacak
Rodney E. Rohde, program chair of Medical Laboratory Science Program di Texas State University, explains kenapa Cyclospora outbreaks termasuk most challenging to investigate:
- Long incubation period - biasanya sekitar 1 minggu dari exposure sampai symptoms muncul
- Short shelf life of fresh produce - bikin susah nexus-in the food that made someone sick
- Testing difficulties - pathogens sering present in very low numbers dan unevenly distributed throughout a food lot
- Complex supply chain - fresh produce passed through multiple growers, packers, distributors, retailers
"Tracing remains difficult because fresh produce often passes through multiple growers, packers, distributors, and retailers before reaching consumers, and contaminated lots may no longer be available once illnesses are recognized."
Geek Opinion: Should Lo Avoid Salad?
According to Rohde, vegetables and fruits tetap important untuk nutritious diet. BUT, kalau lo immunocompromised atau live in state with high caseloads (Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky), maybe consider:
- Avoid raw lettuce dan leafy greens untuk sekarang
- Practice proper food hygiene - wash and dry all fresh produce thoroughly
- Stay updated dengan local, state, and federal health reports
Farmer's market produce might be slightly safer karena potentially non-connected ke common agricultural water supply, tapi Rohde tetap caution:
"Farmer's markets may be non-connected to any type of common agricultural water supply that could be a potential source of contamination. So, in that sense, they may be safer. But, if one is in a 'hot geographic area,' I would still be cautious."
Bottom line: gw personally bakal skip raw greens buat sementara waktu. Bryan udah kasih testimonial yang cukup convincing:
"I wish this on no one," - Bryan
Dude even punya Preparation H wipes di ready. That's dedication untuk stay prepared, tapi also... kinda tells you how bad this thing is, kan?
Peace out! ✌️
