Welcome to Summer of Ludd — festival weeklong yang lagi happen di Tompkins Square Park, East Village, NYC.
Jadi ceritanya, aku (iyalah, journalistnya) lagi standing di tengah-tengah几百 orang观众 pas acara pembukaane.
The vibe: High school play tapi complementary vibes, orchestra manned sama orang-orang pakai Pride regalia, dan 10 different zines yang cover everything from cara quit Spotify sampe "Why GenAI Sucks." Semua obviously handcrafted, dan lo bisa feel the earnestness yang Internet usually loves to punish.
Aturan Ketat: No Phones, No Photos, No Recording!
"Be present. No phones, no recording, no photos allowed."
Seriously. Aku dapetnya pas hujan deras di Juni, lagi waiting out the downpour di Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space. Nemuin booklet di antara zines dan pamphlets. Serendipitously offline banget. 📱❌
Gen Z: First Digital Native yang Mulai Anti-Sama Tech
Nah ini yang menarik. Summer of Ludd heavily associated sama Gen Z — the first generation yang tumbuh sepenuhnya sama digital technology. Despite (atau justru because of) that fact, banyak young people yang increasingly critical terhadap tech's omnipresence.
Data dari Pew Research 2025 reveal: 48% teen respondents bilang social media punya efek negatif ke people their age — naik drastis dari 32% di 2022. That’s almost half of them yang ngerasa social media sucks.
Tapi yang bikin Summer of Ludd unique bukan cuma complain doang — mereka actually build alternatives:
- Flirting and dating offline — literally cara kenalan tanpa dating apps
- Hands-on shortwave radio dan walkie talkie workshop
- 16-mm film screening (partnered sama Museum of Interesting Things)
- "Google in Real Life" — tanya expertise sesama attendees (ada yang baca tarot cards, seriously)
Former Big Tech Employee: Why I Joined the Luddite Movement
Satu attendee (minta anonymity takut retaliation) cerita pengalaman dia working for startups dan salah satu biggest tech firms dunia:
"I quit my last job because our leadership was encouraging non-technical people to write code with AI-assisted tools and pushing them to production. As a security engineer, that is just so concerning."
Dia juga bilang real problem-nya bukan individual choice, tapi gravitational pull dari big platforms:
"If you leave Facebook but all your friends are still on Facebook, you've just cut yourself off from your friend circle."
Bener banget sih. Simply quit everything doesn't work kalau ecosystem-nya still pulling you back.
Geek Opinion: Apakah This Movement Bakal Gede?
Andrew Maynard, professor of advanced technology transitions di Arizona State University, kasih perspective menarik:
"Even when people agree that they think these technologies are harmful, it rarely impacts the way they live their lives. They're still using their phones, social media, AI. But the questions a movement like this raises are critically important."
Honestly? Summer of Ludd probably won't bikin mass exodus dari smartphone (masih realism aja). But mereka udah succeed raising questions yang critically important.
"We are striving to create an event that defies consumption."
Di era donde semua wants your attention 24/7, the fact that ada sekelompok orang yang mencoba create space buat offline connection? That's actually based.
[Summer of Ludd continues through July 5 dengan beach day cookout July 4 dan berbagai events di East Village area — all advertised via paper flyers dan word-of-mouth doang. OG banget.]
