Oke, jadi pernah dengar nggak soal Women's Walkout Google 2018? Kalau belum, siap-siap kaget.
What do you hope this collective action accomplishes?
Tinggal 5 hari. Alasannya simpel: momentum lagi peak, rage masih fresh, dan kalau nunggu lewat US Midterms, energi-nya bakal diluted.
Who Were the People Behind the Movement?
Tanuja digambarin sebagai "good girl pushed to the brink" — rule follower, devoted worker, yang tiba-tiba ready to step out of line.
Meredith pernah debate langsung sama Vint Cerf (the "father of the internet") di depan audience Googlers, dan selonjoran. Topik: why Google nggak boleh bangun machinery of war. Vint keluarin argumen klasik "technology is neutral like a hammer" — dan langsung humbled sama Meredith's airtight case.
350 Cerita yang Bikin Bergeming
Tapi yang paling impactfull dari gerakan ini? Tuesday malam, Claire kirim Google Form ke listserve dengan pertanyaan simpel: "Why are you walking out?" Response-nya 350 cerita. Semua anonym, semua brutal honesty.
"My director pressured women into wearing high heels regularly and openly... referred to our clients as 'battered women' because they 'keep coming back'... He referred to the only African American person on the team as 'dark horse.'"
"There was an off-site at a resort. The director facilitated getting the ABP's room key into the hands of non-Googlers who were all very inebriated. They entered her room while she was sleeping and attempted to climb into bed with her."
"I'm a woman of color. I was underleveled and took a 20% pay cut when I joined Google. After 3 years and 2 successful promotions, I'm finally going to be making the same base salary as I did prior to working at Google."
When did you first notice the gap between what you believed Google to be — progressive, equitable, fair, good — and what you actually see and experience every day?
Why This Still Hits Different in 2026
Ini yang menurut gue most powerful dari excerpt buku Don't Be Evil ini. Claire ngaku dia emang corporate storyteller — buoys of company narrative. Dan dasar dari pekerjaan itu adalah belief bahwa telling Google's story would help usher in a better world. Tapi semua stories dan responses itu beneran nunjukin bahwa "values" perusahaan ini udah jadi veil, cover, PR glossing over the rot.
Pertanyaan besarnya, yang masih relevant banget: what was Google's business really adding to the world, at the end of the day? Ads. A surveillance empire. The scaffolding of attention capture and influence. Dan 20.000 employees yang walkout itu basically bilang: we see through it.
Mereka nggak necessarily expect bisa topple anything — seperti Christine Blasey Ford's testimony that didn't topple Kavanaugh. Tapi they punctured the myth. Dan sometimes, that's where real change starts.
Geek Opinion: Kelas banget sih approach-nya. Nggak perlu hack, nggak perlu leak dokumen classified. Cukup collective action, solidarity, dan willingness to speak up. This is the kind of story yang bikin lo rethink semua "progressive values" yang corporate giants broadcast. Red flag-nya loud and clear.
