Security Researchers Ketemu Jebakan Batman di Skydio
Dua security researchers, Sam Curry dan Maik Robert, lagi asik-asik browsing web archive pakai tool GetAllURLs. Tiba-tiba mereka jumpa sesuatu yang bikin mata melotot: link ke live drone feed milik San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) yang... drumroll... nggak pake password, nggak pake auth, dan expire-nya baru 2025. Bro, ini mah kayak nemu brankas yang cuma ditutup sama sticky note.
Skydio, perusahaan drone asal San Mateo yang jadi salah satu leader di industri drone untuk law enforcement, emang punya fitur namanya ReadyLinks. Fitur ini bikin user bisa generate link shareable buat video atau real-time data stream dari drone. Bisa juga dikasih expiration date sama authentication code. Tapi masalahnya, someone di SFPD bikin link buat lima drone feeds-nya tanpa proteksi sama sekali.
Link tersebut ternyata udah nongkrong di AlienVault Open Threat Exchange — sebuah open-source collection of archived web URLs yang biasa dipake security researchers buat riset — selama kurang lebih 6 bulan. SIX. BULAN. Sebelum Curry dan Robert menemukan dan report ke Skydio.
60 Videos, 48 Jam, Ratusan Orang Tersensor
Mari kita breakdown scale-nya:
- 60 videos dari 20 separate flights
- Each flight record dari 3 feeds: color camera, thermal camera (render orang jadi heat signature), dan view dari rooftop dock
- Total: 3+ jam aerial color footage plus roughly the same amount thermal footage
- 5,000+ GPS points nge-log latitude, longitude, altitude, speed, heading, battery dari takeoff ke landing
- 6 pilot names dan email addresses ikutan ke-expose
WIRED sempet analyze semua video pake object detection software. Hasilnya? Hundreds of people and vehicles ter-capture dalam 20 flights itu. Dalam satu frame aja, ada 34 orang yang lagi nyebrang jalan atau nongkrong di sidewalks. Puluhan faces juga keliatan jelas.
Dan ini semua dalam waktu hanya 48 jam di mid-June. Bayangin scale-nya kalau di-scale ke satu tahun. SFPD sendiri udah launch lebih dari 1,400 kali antara May 2024 dan March 2026. Fleet mereka? Dari 6 drone jadi 98 drones. Growth yang相当的 aggressive.
What the Footage Showed
Jadi footage-nya nunjukin apa aja? Banyak hal yang bikin lo mikir twice:
- Drone ngikutin SUV, zoom ke license plate, lock frame sampe driver pull over
- Target lari dari mobil, hide di belakang parked car, tapi tetep ke-take-down karena a second drone dateng dari angle lain
- Police detentions, apartment searches, bahkan operations yang claim-nya cuma "check on well-being"
Tapi yang paling unsettling? Banyak footage yang... actually nggak ada yang terlalu suspicious:
- Dua cowok keluar mobil, main basket di basketball court — drone tetap follow sampe mereka pergi
- Seorang pemuda di rooftop pake headphones, duduk santai — drone hover, zoom in, lalu pergi
- Orang mabuk di pinggir jalan jadi target "person with a gun" investigation
"That one felt like an invasion of privacy, just so uncomfortable," kata Curry. "Like this person thinks they're by themselves on this roof and has gotten away from everybody, and then there's a police drone watching them."
The Bigger Picture: Privacy di Era Drone + AI
Ini yang paling bikin gue personally concerned. SFPD emang punya policy buat minimize inadvertent data collection tentang uninvolved people. Policy-nya bilang operators harus take reasonable precautions, including turning cameras away, untuk avoid recording images of places where people have reasonable expectation of privacy.
Tapi footage yang kebocoran ini? Shows full missions from takeoff to landing. Streets, apartment buildings, rooftops, cars, courtyards, bystanders — semua ke-capture. Dan ini baru soal 48 jam dari satu department. Imagine implications-nya:
"Maybe no human has the time to pore over every frame of these videos, but an AI can do that, and it's scalable to vast amounts of video," — Jay Stanley, ACLU senior policy analyst
Dengan AI yang bisa analyze footage se-scale ini, drone surveillance bukan cuma soal "ada mata di langit." Ini soal systematic data collection tentang entire populations yang siap di-process kapan aja.
Gadget Review: Skydio X10
For context, Skydio X10 yang dipake SFPD ini memang salah satu drone paling advanced di market:
- Autonomous tracking — bisa lock dan follow target automatically
- Thermal imaging — bisa lihat heat signatures, bahkan di kondisi low-light
- Real-time data streaming — bisa transmit footage langsung ke operators
- Long flight time dengan decent payload (5-pound weight)
Fitur-fitur ini emang designed buat law enforcement use cases. Tapi ya... kalau security implementation-nya kayak gini, ya jadi useless. Bahkan dangerous.
SFPD Says It's "Internal Restricted Link"
Claro, SFPD kasih statement resmi. Mereka bilang link tersebut adalah "internal restricted link" yang cuma buat SFPD law enforcement purposes. Mereka juga bilang link-nya "improperly obtained and accessed by individuals without authorization."
Curry dan Robert sih pointedly notice: they didn't bypass any security atau authentication sama sekali. Kalau mau akses stream-nya, lo tinggal... buka link-nya. No hack, no crack, no social engineering. Just browsing.
Closing Thoughts
Watching these videos, Curry bilang, changed his sense of his own privacy. "This was the first time I'd seen drones used in a city like this, and looking at these streets, they're the same streets I walk down when I'm visiting. I guess it just makes me feel more observed."
Dan honestly? Same, bro. Same.
Ini bukan soal SFPD doang. Ini soal fundamental question: sampai sejauh mana kita willing to trade privacy demi security? Dan yang lebih penting — kalau data surveillance emang musti dikumpulin, security implementation-nya harus level mana biar nggak bocor kayak ini?
TL;DR: Drone police itu memang keren secara teknologi. Tapi kalau implementasi security-nya kayak ini, mungkin lebih baik drones-nya dilepasin aja ke ranah yang lebih... transparan. Atau minimal, pasang password. PLEASE.
