Lo harusnya jadi positive advocate buat industry lo."
Baker bukan sembarang orang — dia ngarahin Amodei soal regulasi AI yang udah diaadvokasiin, termasuk California bill SB-53 soal transparency requirements buat perusahaan AI besar. Baker ngerasa Amodei udah "kalah argumen" soal regulasi, dan sebagai future CEO of one of the most important companies in the world, Amodei should make an effort to be a more positive advocate.
Tapi Amodei? OG banget gak terima directed. Dia langsung post panjang di X buat klarifikasi. "Messaging gue gak pernah disproportionately negative," tulis Amodei. "Actually, writing gue about equally balanced between risks and benefits." Dia bahkan nulis essay "Machines of Loving Grace" because he "didn't feel the AI industry was painting an inspiring enough picture of how the technology could radically transform the world for the better." Jadi bukan soal pessimis — dia mau inspire, tapi tetap realistis.
Nah ini yang juicy. Amodei agree kalau publik punya negative view of AI — "this is a big problem." "I think it is fundamentally a crisis of trust," tegas Amodei. "I think that ordinary people don't trust companies, governments, or the tech industry and always suspect that we are cooking up some new way to screw them over." Intinya? People udah trauma sama tech companies yang overpromise underdeliver, jadi apapun yang lo omongin bakal di-suspect anyway.
Amodei even ngakuin kalau criticism paling valid terhadap AI companies termasuk Anthropic adalah: "we haven't yet delivered on our big promises to benefit the world." "That is totally on us, and I think it's the criticism you should be making, instead of all this stuff about messaging and marketing," katanya. Jadi dia gak nyalahin publik — dia malah ngakuin kalau delivery itu yang masih kurang. Promising AI will cure cancer? "More a cliché than it is inspiring." What actually changes people's opinion? "Actually curing cancer." Mic drop.
Soal regulasi, Amodei juga驳回 Baker's false choice argument. "Many people outside this bubble think of regulation as something that constrains corporate power and benefits ordinary people." Dia gak necessarily agree sama perspective itu, tapi Anthropic tetep very careful soal policy proposals mereka — try very hard bikin proposals yang disadvantage frontier AI companies while advantaging smaller competitors.
Intinya? AI is structurally a technology that tends to concentrate power. Open-weights do help, tapi nowhere near sufficient karena cuma shift concentration ke yang punya most compute dan chips. Tapi dengan "the right rules of the road," Amodei bilang kita bisa simultaneously: (a) address AI's cyber/bio/alignment risks, (b) institutionally constrain power of frontier AI companies, dan (c) leave room for open-weights while addressing specific risks they bring.
Geek Opinion
Honestly, take Amodei di sini quite refreshing. Too often kita jump ke "AI is scary" vs "AI will save humanity" debate, padahal root cause-nya lebih mundane: people are tired of being promised things that don't materialize.
AI backlash isn't about being pessimis or optimisme — it's about accountability. Because as Amodei said, promising isn't enough anymore. Time to actually deliver.
